Notpla x Costa *

This project explored the potential application of Notpla’s seaweed-based packaging for Costa’s hot takeaway food range, with a focus on sandwiches and similar products. Working within a material-led brief, the project investigated how Notpla’s biodegradable materials could meet the functional demands of hot food packaging, including heat resistance, structural integrity, and user handling.

The design process involved iterative sketching and ideation, alongside hands-on material testing to assess different seaweed material thicknesses. These tests revealed key challenges around durability, insulation, and form stability when exposed to heat and moisture. Insights from testing directly informed design decisions, resulting in packaging concepts that balanced sustainability, functionality, and user experience within the constraints of the material.
