Black & Decker Brief
A research-led product design project addressing physical strain in garden weeding through an ergonomic manual tool.
About
-
Black & Decker set a live brief to design a gardening tool that improves user experience and usability. The project aimed to identify a genuine user problem within gardening and develop a practical, manufacturable solution.
-
Initial research revealed that weeding is one of the most physically demanding gardening tasks. Users reported discomfort, repetitive strain, and difficulty maintaining posture, particularly when working close to the ground.
-
Both Primary and Secondary Research was carried out through visiting garden stores, interviewing gardeners, and store owners. Ranging from ages 30- 85 years old. This determined the pain points users encountered with existing solutions. It also helped narrow down the main problem area for us to target. Further research was carried out with user testing to help iterate our solution further and ensure it meets the user´s needs.
